I have implemented Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for many customers. Recently, one of my customer was dealing with a problem where he needed to reset their Salesforce Authenticator App. So I thought I will publish the process in my blog with the hope that it might help others in future.
Let's Understand MFA First
The form you have selected does not exist.
MFA in Salesforce stands for Multi-Factor Authentication. This security feature requires users to provide more than one piece of evidence (or factor) to verify their identity when logging into their Salesforce account.
- Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP): A code generated by an app on your phone or a hardware token.
- Push Notification: A notification sent to your mobile device that you must approve.
- Security Key: A physical device that you plug into your computer.
By requiring two or more factors, MFA significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access, even if a hacker obtains your password.
Problem Statement
Couple of problems:
- The user account's email is changed. Now MFA was associated with the previous email address. Even though the new email address is being successfully associated with the user account, the notification in the Salesforce Authenticator app is still going to the previous email address holder.
- The user had accidentally deleted the Salesforce user account from their mobile Authenticator app, and now they cannot access their Salesforce account.
- The user has changed the mobile, and the old mobile has the Authenticator App associated with the Salesforce user account. The user is not able to configure the Authenticator app on the new mobile.
Solution
Here are the steps needed to reset:
- Go to Salesforce Setup.
- Type Users in the Quick Find box.
- Click on users, and from there, select the user name you want to reset.
- Click Disconnect next to App Registration: Salesforce Authenticator
- Please ask the user to try logging in again. This time, the user will be able to configure Salsforce Authenticator App.
Reset Your Own Salesforce Authenticator App
This is when you want to reset your Salesforce Authenticator app but do not want to delete a Salesforce account from your Authenticator app. Here are the steps:
- Go to Personal Settings.
- Click on Advance User Details.
- Here, disconnect Salesforce Authenticator.
Final Thoughts
That's all for today. I hope it is clear to you now how to reset the Salesforce Authenticator App.
